What are the prerequisites?

  • Currently, no prerequisites are necessary.  However, students with a strong background in construction, building science or home inspection tend to pick up the material at a faster pace.

What is the typical equipment investment cost for becoming a mold inspector?

  • If you’re already performing home inspections or construction work, you likely already own many of the basics.  In addition, you’ll likely spend between $3,000 – $8,000 for mold specific equipment.  The largest variable depends on whether or not you decide to purchase a thermal imaging camera.  Low end models start at $4,000.  However, a thermal imaging camera certainly isn’t necessary for providing a high quality mold inspection.

What insurance is necessary for mold inspection?

  • If you only perform inspections, you’ll need professional liability insurance, commonly known as ‘errors and omissions insurances (E&O).  This covers mistakes in your consulting services.  For example, if you miss a major mold problem in a house during a pre-purchase an inspection, and the homeowner later finds an expensive problem, E&O insurance will cover your mistake.
